The Paris Accounting Platform vs Intuit’s Delaware Default

Pennylane is operated by Pennylane SAS, a French société par actions simplifiée registered in Paris (RCS 880 265 921). Founded in 2020 and led by CEO and co-founder Arthur Waller, Pennylane combines bookkeeping, invoicing, expense management, bank synchronisation, cash forecasting and financial reporting in a single platform that a business and its accounting firm use together. It reports around 800,000 business clients and more than 6,000 partner accounting firms, closed 2025 with €115 million ARR, and raised €175 million in January 2026 in a round led by TCV with Blackstone Growth at a €3.5 billion valuation. In December 2025 it received definitive registration from the French tax authority as a Plateforme Agréée for the e-invoicing reform, and in November 2025 it launched in Germany.

QuickBooks is Intuit’s small-business accounting suite and one of the most widely used accounting products in the English-speaking world. Intuit Inc. was founded in 1983, reincorporated in Delaware in 1993 and is headquartered in Mountain View, California. QuickBooks Online has mature local editions in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, a large accountant network and a deep app ecosystem. As a US corporation, Intuit is within the reach of the CLOUD Act and FISA Section 702 regardless of hosting region. Notably, Intuit withdrew QuickBooks from France, ending service on 31 December 2023.

Accounting data is about as sensitive as business data gets: the full general ledger, bank transactions, payroll-related entries, customer and supplier lists, margins and tax positions. For European businesses that want that ledger held by an EU-parented company — and, in France, by a registered e-invoicing platform — Pennylane is the structural alternative.

Product Capabilities

Bookkeeping and Accountant Collaboration

  • Pennylane: shared workspace where the business and its accounting firm work on the same live data; automated categorisation with rules, validation workflows, monthly and annual closing, tax filing management and customisable financial statements (Premium plan and accounting-firm offering).
  • QuickBooks: mature double-entry bookkeeping with bank feeds, rules, reconciliation and reporting; accountants access client files via dedicated accountant tooling (QuickBooks Online Accountant) and the ProAdvisor programme.

Notable: Pennylane’s design starts from the French expert-comptable model, where the accountant is central. QuickBooks starts from the business owner doing their own books, with the accountant invited in.

Invoicing and E-Invoicing

  • Pennylane: quotes, invoices, deposits, recurring invoices, automated reminders, payment links; e-invoicing included in all plans via its own DGFiP-registered Plateforme Agréée, with Peppol interoperability tested.
  • QuickBooks: invoicing, estimates, recurring invoices and online payments in supported countries; not a registered platform for the French reform (and not sold in France).

Banking, Payments and Spend

  • Pennylane: bank synchronisation under its ACPR registration as an account information service provider; business accounts via Swan, payment terminals via Adyen and invoice financing via Defacto (as listed in Pennylane’s legal notice); cards, supplier payments and expense management.
  • QuickBooks: bank feeds, bill pay and payments in supported markets; payroll is a separate add-on in markets such as the US and UK.

Local Tax Compliance

  • Pennylane: built for French accounting and tax rules; German product launched November 2025.
  • QuickBooks: strong in its home markets — e.g. HMRC-recognised Making Tax Digital VAT filing in the UK — but lacks native German DATEV/ELSTER-style workflows and is no longer available in France.

Notable: for a UK, US, Canadian or Australian business, QuickBooks’ local compliance depth is a genuine advantage Pennylane does not offer.

Ecosystem

  • Pennylane: API access from the Essentiel plan; growing integration list focused on the French market.
  • QuickBooks: one of the largest accounting app ecosystems, plus a large global pool of accountants and bookkeepers already trained on it.

Sovereignty Model

  • Pennylane: French parent (Pennylane SAS); GDPR with CNIL oversight; no CLOUD Act reach at the corporate level. Core data runs on AWS in Ireland, so a US-parented hyperscaler is part of the sub-processor chain; e-invoicing platform data is hosted in France on SecNumCloud-qualified infrastructure.
  • QuickBooks: US parent (Intuit Inc., Delaware); CLOUD Act and FISA Section 702 reach applies to Intuit as a US corporation regardless of hosting region.

The distinction matters most for the full general ledger: it holds every customer, supplier, salary-related entry and margin a company has. Holding it with an EU-parented provider removes the parent-level extraterritorial exposure, even if the infrastructure layer still involves AWS.

Reference Customers

Pennylane does not need a logo wall to show scale: by January 2026 it reported around 800,000 businesses on the platform and more than 6,000 accounting firms as partners — up from roughly 350,000 businesses and 4,500 firms in April 2025. Typical users are French freelancers and small businesses whose accountant runs on Pennylane, SMEs that want accounting, invoicing and spend in one tool, and accounting firms moving their client portfolio onto a shared platform.

QuickBooks serves millions of small businesses worldwide, concentrated in the US and other English-speaking markets.

Who Should Switch?

Pennylane is the structural choice for:

  • French businesses of any size that need a registered e-invoicing platform for the September 2026 reform
  • Businesses whose accountant already uses Pennylane — the shared-ledger model removes exports and back-and-forth
  • Accounting firms in France looking for a platform shared with clients
  • German SMEs and Steuerberater willing to adopt a newly launched European entrant
  • Organisations that want an EU-parented company holding their general ledger

QuickBooks remains the right choice for:

  • Businesses in the US, UK, Canada or Australia that rely on its local tax, VAT and payroll features
  • Teams whose accountant or bookkeeper works only in QuickBooks
  • Businesses that depend on specific apps in the QuickBooks ecosystem
  • Companies in EU countries where Pennylane is not yet localized (here, local EU accounting tools are usually a better comparison than either product)

The Bottom Line

QuickBooks is a mature, widely supported accounting product with excellent local compliance in its core English-speaking markets and an ecosystem Pennylane cannot match outside France. In those markets it is often the pragmatic choice.

It is not, however, an option in France since Intuit’s withdrawal, and Intuit Inc. remains a Delaware corporation within CLOUD Act and FISA Section 702 reach.

For French businesses — and increasingly German ones — Pennylane is the structurally aligned choice: a French SAS, a DGFiP-registered e-invoicing platform, ISO 27001-certified, built around collaboration with the accountant, and used by around 800,000 businesses and 6,000+ firms. Its limits are honest ones: a short country list so far, and AWS Ireland underneath the core product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns Pennylane and who owns QuickBooks?

Pennylane is operated by Pennylane SAS, a French société par actions simplifiée headquartered at 2-4 rue Jules Lefebvre in Paris (RCS Paris 880 265 921), founded in 2020, with Arthur Waller as CEO and co-founder. As a French company it is governed by the GDPR and supervised by the CNIL for data protection. QuickBooks is a product of Intuit Inc., founded in 1983 and reincorporated in Delaware in 1993, headquartered in Mountain View, California. As a US corporation, Intuit falls within the reach of the US CLOUD Act and FISA Section 702 regardless of where customer data is hosted.

Can I still use QuickBooks in France?

No. Intuit stopped selling new QuickBooks subscriptions in France in early 2023 and ended QuickBooks products and services for French small businesses and accountants on 31 December 2023. French businesses that used QuickBooks had to migrate to another tool. For France specifically, the comparison is therefore mostly relevant to groups with entities in several countries, or to businesses that previously ran on QuickBooks.

What is Pennylane's status under the French e-invoicing reform?

France's B2B e-invoicing obligation starts on 1 September 2026 (receiving for all companies, issuing for large and mid-sized companies first). Invoices must pass through a Plateforme Agréée (formerly called PDP) registered with the tax authority. Pennylane received its definitive registration as a Plateforme Agréée from the DGFiP in December 2025 after interoperability tests, and e-invoicing is included in all its plans. QuickBooks is not available in France and is not a registered platform.

Where is Pennylane data hosted?

According to Pennylane's security page and sub-processor list, customer data is hosted on AWS in Ireland (Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL), while data for its e-invoicing Plateforme Agréée is hosted in France on SecNumCloud-qualified infrastructure (S3NS and Outscale are listed, alongside Scalingo). Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. The corporate parent is French, but buyers who want no US-parented provider anywhere in the chain should note the AWS dependency for core data.

Is Pennylane available outside France?

Pennylane launched in Germany in November 2025, opening an office in Munich and positioning itself for German businesses and tax advisors (Steuerberater). Outside France and Germany there is currently no localized product. QuickBooks Online, by contrast, has long-standing localized editions in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, but has withdrawn from several markets including France.

How does pricing compare?

As of October 2026, Pennylane's French plans for independents and very small businesses are Starter €7, Basique €14, Essentiel €24 and Premium €79 per month excluding VAT (the Premium plan adds the full accounting module), with a 15-day free trial; SME and mid-market plans are quote-based, and many businesses access Pennylane through their accounting firm. QuickBooks Online US list prices are $38 (Simple Start), $85 (Essentials), $140 (Plus) and $340 (Advanced) per month, with a limited free tier and frequent introductory discounts. QuickBooks prices differ by country (e.g. GBP pricing in the UK).
